Les petits spécimens is an annual event organised by Le Signe for young visitors, aimed at schoolchildren, families and all those curious enough to learn about graphic design in a fun way. This 9th chapter of Les petits spécimens is devoted to the work of Aurélien Débat, author and illustrator.
A graduate of the École Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg in 2003, Aurélien has published several children’s books with Actes Sud, Nathan, Bayard, and Le Vengeur Masqué. He also creates children’s games such as Bloc Ville and Tampons Chantier, produced by Moulin Roty.
Aurélien has designed numerous graphic creations for institutions like the Centre national des arts plastiques (Cnap), the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Châteauvallon National Theater, Le Signe, Le Secours Populaire, and the Cité de l’Architecture.
His work revolves around the concepts of play, tools, and modular construction. Through installations, books, educational kits, and objects, he invites visitors to engage with tools in a playful way, fostering creativity and movement.
By blending observation and participation through play, these projects become both a pretext and a means to bring people together.
Bâtons et élastiques takes the form of a modular construction game consisting of 30,000 colorful sticks (15 cm long and 0.5 cm wide) and 90,000 rubber bands. First unveiled at Le Bel Ordinaire in Pau, this setup was also tested at the Fondation Cartier (Paris) and Mille Formes (Clermont-Ferrand).
At the entrance of the exhibition, each participant receives a box of sticks and rubber bands to create their own construction. The creations are displayed on a structure of cardboard pallets arranged across multiple levels. Over time, the sculptures connect and rise, forming a unified whole.
