As part of the ‘Culture - Justice 2024’ call for projects, le Signe, centre national du graphisme, supported the Typo Tattoo project, designed and led by Samuel Eckert, graphic designer, tattoo artist and illustrator.

Tackling the issue of tattooing as a medium of expression, Eckert offered participants a way of exploring content and form through typography. The discussion centred on the question: "How do you draw letters that express an idea through their own shapes?"

Samuel Eckert led three workshops at Chaumont prison over the course of 2024. The participants carried out graphic and narrative research, culminating in the creation of tattoos, which were placed on their skin during a photo session.

These images and the various stages in their design have been compiled in a book and will be presented at a public exhibition at Le Signe, starting on Friday 15 November. The exhibition will feature a number of visuals created during the workshops, as well as photographs of the tattoos produced.

The Typo Tattoo project was carried out in collaboration with the Chaumont prison and the Haute Marne Penitentiary Integration and Probation Service (SPIP). It was supported by the government, the Grand-Est region, the Haute-Marne département and the City of Chaumont.
